European Integration, Devolution and Secession

Abstract

The panel brings together papers that address the connections between the process of European integration and processes of devolution and secession within the European states. It includes papers treating integration both as an independent and a dependent variable, i.e. exploring the impact of integration on devolution and secession as well as the consequences of devolution and secession for integration. The five papers cover, in particular, perceptions of the EU macro-regional strategy in the Alpine area; parties’ exploitation of the European dimension in relation to state restructuring; the adoption of exit clauses in federal and quasi-federal systems; secessionism as a potential outcome of the EU multilevel governance; and the connections between Serbia’s EU accession strategy and its counter-secession strategy vis-à-vis Kosovo.
