Abstract

Institutions are at the core of politics: they constitute political actors and enable them to act purposefully by providing them with rules, standards, and legitimacy. This panel aims to discuss the role of institutions in the various stages of political careers. Political institutions in this context are broad, formal institutions, federalism or the form of government for example, or specific institutions like gender quotas. We discuss questions such as: Which effect do electoral institutions like gender quotas have on representation? Or: Does a term-limit encourage MPs to shirk in parliamentary voting? The panel will contribute to research on political institutions, political careers, recruitment, and parliamentary behavior by providing the possiblity for scientific exchange and collaboration among scholars.
