In the context of uncertainty about the future of Europe and their inclusion within the EU, societies in the European periphery face the challenge of reconciling their past, present, and future in a coherent narrative. Thus, history and memory have become important sites of political contestation, as competing historical narratives and commemoration of specific historical events are used by elites to mobilize support or opposition to European integration. This panel includes papers that bridge historical analysis with contemporary debates on Europe.
