Thursday 11:00 - 12:40 CEST (05/09/2019)
The aim of this panel is to cast light on an important aspect of Brexit that has been ever-present in public debates, but has so far not received corresponding attention by academic scholars, namely the role of parliaments in this process. It gathers papers that analyse the parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit in a comparative perspective. By looking at the aspects such as the executive-legislative relationship, the actual parliamentary leverage in the recent negotiation process, party-political dynamics and politicization of EU as well as the national interest mediation, the panel will present a comprehensive picture of the Brexit-oriented parliamentary mobilization. It builds on a collaborative book-project by a group of international scholars which will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2019. The ECPR conference will be an occassion to further develop the specific research of the panel participants as well as to promote the book to a wider audience by presenting and discussing a broader picture of EU-27 Brexit scrutiny included in this collected volume.
