This panel provides thrilling insights into major issues of public opinion research based on innovative methodological approaches and new data. Two papers add to the vast body of literature on political trust. While the first one stresses the effects of authoritarianism and perceived threat on political trust, the other one systematically assesses the causal impact of several determinants of political trust with an experimental research design. A third paper offers new findings on public attitudes toward recently introduced affirmative action policies in Brazil, which are based on a unique and representative data set. The authors of the fourth paper use social media data and machine learning in order to gain insight into opinion dynamics during a highly polarised referendum in Greece
