This panel explores varieties of populism: left, right and technocratic. The panel discusses roots of populism, strategic use of populism in party competition and a relationship between populism and liberal democracy. As an ideology, populism articulates neglected grievances using the language of the people (Canovan 1984, 1999). The panel covers Western and Eastern Europe and addresses issues such as the relationship between populism and refugee crisis in Germany, the impact of decentralization on radical right mobilization and forecasting populism in Eastern Europe in 2030. In addition to the discussion of populism being rooted in a traditional left-right spectrum, the panel also addresses technocratic populism in a comparative perspective.
