The panel examines the influence gender has on political violence. It considers the impact political contention has on women and women’s role in terrorism, as well as examining the broader gender dynamics of violent politics. The papers draw attention to the agency women exert within violent organisations, the different roles women play, what influences different forms of participation, and the multiple ways women enable and inhibit political violence. Papers cover a number of militant organisations, including the IRA, ETA, ISIS and Boko Haram, and examine a wide range of contexts, from Sierra Leone and Spain, to Palestine, Syria and Iraq. In addition, papers consider the practical and policy implications of how gender is conceptualised and understood in relation to terrorism and political violence.
