Abstract

Globalization and an increasing political dynamic environment continue to speed the challenges of the EU of staying competitive. The incoming European Commission has ambitious plans for shaping a coherent EU defence and security policy, A Green Deal, securing a rule of law monitoring mechanism, a new pact on migration and asylum, creating new business opportunities, fighting against money laundering, and strengthening the democratic accountability in our European Monetary Union. Von der Leyen and her team will also be required to act in response to an array of other issues and events outside of their direct control. To succeed, the Commission needs ambition to step up to this challenge. This also raises questions about how accountability and transparency, both of which are necessary for public legitimacy and support, are reconciled. The individual papers in this panel deal with the Commission’s leadership, accountability and responsiveness in the EU system.
