The shift of the ‘permissive consensus’ about European integration to a ‘constraining dissensus’ and the increasing prominence of national divisions on EU integration are well-established notions in the political and academic debates. Yet, the consolidation of Eurosceptic parties challenging the mainstream and the structuring of an integration dimension of political competition require more systematic analysis. This panel (which complements another panel in this conference on the impact of domestic politicisation on the supranational arena) brings together empirical contributions focusing on the ‘top-down’ impact of EU integration on national parties, party competition and public opinion. Papers in this panel place their analytical focus on how the contestation of the EU plays out at the national level and what conditions facilitate or constrain it.
