The shift of the ‘permissive consensus’ about European integration to a ‘constraining dissensus’ and the increasing prominence of national divisions on EU integration are well-established notions in the political and academic debates. Yet, the consolidation of Eurosceptic parties challenging the mainstream and the structuring of an integration dimension of political competition require more systematic analysis. This panel (which complements another panel in this conference on EU politicisation in the national arena) brings together empirical contributions focusing on the ‘bottom-up’ impact of domestic EU contestation on EU institutions and decision-making. Papers in this panel place their focus on how the contestation and the politicisation of the EU affect supranational politics, institutions and policies.
