Abstract

This panel deals with some of the major challenges European societies and politics are currently facing. These transformations can be boiled down to the loosening of the social ties between institutions, individuals and political action. Supranational institutions like the European Commission, the European Parliament, social movements, interest groups, parapublic organisations, elites and ‘ordinary’ citizens all grapple with changing political circumstances and attempt to redefine the legitimate parameters of political identity and action by challenging, in different ways, existing political hierarchies and values. These attempts to solve the contradictions between archaic descriptions of reality and political dynamics explain the often messy and opaque developments in European politics.
