This paper will present a part of the result of my long years research about transition to democracy and social movements in Indonesia. The focus of of this paper will be on the degree of violence and its relation to the authority response. I compiled the data during the period of authoritarian, transition and post-transition. The conclusion will show that there are differences of relation between the degree of violence and the authority response in each period. The paper also hypothesizes that the most turbulent violence has happened at the most uncertain time.
