Abstract

A key issue in assessing validity of measurement of campaign professionalism is the degree to which individual items in measuring scales contribute to the overall indices of professionalism. So far, the existing measures have relied on non-weighted scales in which each item has an equal weight. However, this may not reflect the way campaigns are planned and run by parties. Some aspects of professional campaigning may be more important than others and, equally, our measures should reflect this. Otherwise we would risk weakening the validity of these measures. For the purpose of increasing validity and allowing campaign professionals’ views to influence the measures, we asked German and Finnish campaign managers to rank several campaign items for their importance in the campaign. In the paper, we will run two sets of analyses, one with weighted scales and the other with non-weighted scales.
