Abstract

The literature exploring media effects on public opinion seldom addresses the impact of multiple media on citizens‘ attitudes, although most citizens combine a plurality of sources. While the juxtaposition new old media is rapidly becoming common parlance in political science and communication studies, we still know very little about the interplay between these two elements. The objective of this paper is to address their joint as well as their separate impact. This survey contains a large battery of questions on media usage for political information and, provides a valuable source to disentangle media effect among members of the European public. The paper explores the extent to which European citizens use different media for political newsgathering and assesses the effects of each platform as well as their combined impact on political knowledge and opinions towards the European Union.
