Abstract

There has been a rising attention into personality traits in leaders. This paper focuses on narcissism, arguing its presence in political leaders. To support the theoretical frame a case-study was performed focusing on the Italian ex-prime minister SIlvio Berlusconi using the Million Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC) method. In the discussion, findings from the specifically for political personality assessment designed inventory will be reviewed. Recent literature has shifted focus towards the more dysfunctional traits such as narcissism, which goes beyond the classical Big Five personality traits (Judge, Piccolo & Korsalka, 2009). The usefulness of the extension of personality assessment in politicians by adding Dark Triad personality traits (narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism) will be argued (Paulhus, 2002).
