Abstract

The European Parliament elections of 2014 took place in a very fragile environment. Economic crisis, bailout packages, and austerity measures were the central agenda while very decreased level of trust of people of Europe in European, and national, institutions was alarming. This paper comments on the EP election results and compares them with the latest national parliamentary elections in Member States that took place after 2009. Political parties will be taken as the main agent and vote shares of all the groups will be compared to previous elections. The trends of increasing extreme right, shrinking mainstream parties and the changes party systems going through will be analysed.
