Abstract

Who can claim to ‘best’ represent feminism is a contested issue: mediated by thevspecific social and political context but also by ideology and the type of feminist representation undertaken, whether that be grassroots activism, feminist organisations or political parties. The symbolism of high profile western feminist claim making has implications for those interested in the extent to which they represent marginalised women and in particular those from ethnic minorities. This paper considers the theoretical opportunities that symbolic representation provides for advancing an intersectional agenda. It draws upon a range of recent high profile feminist acts, including Slutwalk, Femen and the Feminist Initiative Party, in order to explore the extent to which intersectionality, so central to contemporary feminist praxis, has formed part of the repertoire of political activism.
