The two round system provides the opportunity for studying jointly the change both in electoral supply and voter behavior from the first to the second round. We examine the most recent (2014) French municipal elections, which are held under a mixed electoral system in which the plurality rule dominates. We focus on the 156 cities over 9.000 inhabitants in which four lists competed in the first round. We run OLS models in which the dependant variable is the total vote share of the top two candidates in the first round. We show that results of the top two candidates are the fruits of both parties and voters’ coordination. Our results are even more conclusive that some control variables have been introduced in our models, particularly the trend in turnout and the number of lists who are not able to maintain in the race due to the threshold.
