Abstract

Using ISSP data, we attempt to create a conceptual diagram of national identity that assembles the findings of previous studies and clarifies the relationships among subordinate concepts of national identity. The diagram also specifies the relationships between subordinate concepts of national identity and other political values such as authoritarianism etc. This study also investigates the conceptual structures of subordinate concepts of national identity: purism, patriotism, national pride, anti-foreignism, ethnic (racial) discrimination and perceived threat in empirical analysis. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that in the typical ethnic nation, Japan, the ethnic criteria of purism correlate strongly with the civic criteria. Furthermore, although the ethnic criteria of purism affect both patriotism and anti-foreignism, the civic criteria of purism influence only patriotism. Finally, there are relatively strong correlations between authoritarianism and the ethnic criteria of purism, patriotism and ethnic discrimination, but authoritarianism correlates weakly with the civic criteria of purism.
