Nationalism and internationalism tend to be seen as ideologically opposed. Nationalist parties though are involved in international politics. The aim of the presentation will be to analyse the political and ideological investment of the European Free Alliance on international issues. The EFA, created in 1981, is the European umbrella party that gathers most of the European democratic and reformist autonomist/separatist parties. It will appear that international issues are not only at the heart of the structure and the project of the EFA, but also of its world view, of its ideology. Indeed, the EFA has developed a coherent and logical, but narrow, approach, linked to its ideological core, focusing on the right to self-determination and self-government for all the nations without states, promoting a multipolar world, condemning top-down approaches to development policies, defending an anti-nuclear, non-aggressive and non-violent approach to military issues.
