The ERASMUS programme has been often considered as the best tool for promoting European identity. This research questions whether the ERASMUS programme promotes European identity. It hypothesizes that it rather further enhances feelings of Europeanness that were present already before participating in the exchange.
The paper presents the first findings of a longitudinal research on the ERASMUS exchange programme and European identity in Europe combining quantitative (survey) and qualitative (face-to-face interviews) methods and comparing new EU member states (the Baltic states) and non-EU member state (Switzerland).
