Abstract

Based on a sociological research on men’s feminist activism in France, this paper proposes to analyse the effect of feminist involvement after the disengagement, arguing that feminist socialisation has deeply affected their values and practices in everyday life. There are three main effects of feminist activism. First, some of these men keep having personal relationships with feminists or continue to participate to feminist events (mainly cultural events), thus maintaining their feminist socialisation. Secondly, some men state that they “are still involved differently” by subverting gender norms at work or in their family life. Finally, they all consider “feminism as a guideline” of their life, claiming that feminism guides their attitudes, practices and choices, even when some of those attitudes or practices can be perceived as non-feminist. By maintaining their attachment to feminist ideas, there is still the possibility of new feminist involvements, sometimes even several decades later.
