Abstract

The Ethiopian community in Israel is one of the most deprived population groups both socially, culturally and economically. As a result, it is also on the lower end of the digital divide and is having difficulties making its voice heard in the Israeli social-political arena. The proposed lecture is based on a PhD dissertation-in-progress examining the role of ICTs in the building of social capabilities, which will allow members of this community to participate in the social movement aimed at bettering their social positioning. The lecture will focus on an analysis of the activists’ “Whatsapp” group conversations and of interviews made with the activists before they were to be provided with new computers aimed at serving their needs.
