In the paper two models of reason and reasoning will be distinguished -- speculative and deliberative -- and the different role that (reflective) judgment plays in each of them will be discussed. It will be argued that political theory can share both a speculative and a deliberative view of reason, that (reflective) judgment is the organon of the deliberative version, exemplified by public reason, and that difficulties may arise from mixing the two models of reason.
