Abstract

In last fifteen years, we can see decline of democracy in the Latin America. Many regimes felt to the hybrid zone between liberal democracy and stable autocracy. Which explanatory factor or combination of factors can explain this decline? This paper seeks to explain conditions of “hybridization” in the Latin America. For this purpose, I systematically compare all countries in the Latin America between 2000 and 2015. Using a two-step fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) I concentrate on nine most prominent explanations of why democracies either survive or not. This research uses data from variety of sources including Variety of Democracy Project.
