Abstract

The main thread of the paper addresses the contested and ambiguous issue of European identifications as one of the multiple-layers of identities one can construct. There is a certain interplay between structural social forces and individual life-experiences conditioning the emergence of such identification, which is one of the concerns of the paper. In order to combine both levels of social reality in one research, the theory of transnational social fields is employed, allowing to explore macro and micro aspects in influencing European identifications. The second focus of the paper is not just on conditions enabling such identifications, but also on how European identification can be seen as reflexive deliberations leading to instrumental actions. Theoretical framework is used as a framework for explaining the specific experiences, narratives and future projections of specific social group, which is regularly participating in European social spaces. The paper therefore draws the insight from semi-structured interviews with Slovenian students who have spent at least half a year abroad due to study or other reasons. Using qualitative analysis techniques, certain codes and narratives have been recognized, which reveal the instrumental nature of European identifications, the role of European transnational social resources, particular embeddedness of individuals in transnational social fields and capacity to reflexive deliberations underpinning such identifications.
