Abstract

The study would analyse the situation of the Crimean Tatars after the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Tatars are understood as a distinctive identity-based ethno-national and ethno-religious society in terms of societal security analytical framework. The analysis would focus on the contemporary threats to Crimean Tatar identity under the new pro-Russian authorities in Crimea, within the theoretical framework of societal security, and it would explain the nonviolent nature of Crimean Tatar resistance. The reasons of failure to form pan-Crimean identity in the years prior to Russian annexation of the peninsula, as well as changing citizenship and the role played by Crimean Tatars' collective memory, would be discussed.
