Abstract

Since 2010 several social movements have been formed in Hungary to mobilize citizens. The paper aims to answer to the question what does the emergence of these movements suggest about the conventional way of doing politics? The paper focuses on attitudes of the voters of Together 2014, Momentum and the Hungarian Two-tailed Dog Party during the 2018 parliamentary elections. Although in electoral terms the success of these movements in Hungary is limited, they organize nonconventional political events and demonstrations regularly. The paper compares the situation of these movements to other, more successful movements of the Visegrad region and aims to explain those specific factors of the Hungarian political (e.g. two third majority of the governing party, mixed electoral system, party finance) and social (low level of civic participation) factors that limit the success of these movements during parliamentary elections. Based on data from the Participation, Representation, Partisanship Hungarian Election Study 2018 the paper goes beyond presenting electoral results of these movements and aims find out whether voters of these social movements were more active in taking part in non-conventional forms of political participation during the campaign than voters of established parties.
