Abstract

More than 2,5 million of Poles left the country and settled abroad after Poland’s accession to the EU in May 2004. Substantial part of them are residents in destination countries now for more than a decade. Are Polish migrants interested in politics and taking active part in it? Do they follow information about the situation in Poland and in the country where they live? Do they vote in the elections in Poland, in their country of residence or in both? Do they engage in organizations and take part in the life of the local community in the country of residence? How their current level of participation is affected by their pre-emigration experience? These and other questions were asked to Polish migrants in a wide survey carried out in 2018 in Ireland, the UK and Germany (N = 500 in each country). In the paper the preliminary results of the study on political and social participation of Polish migrants in the transnational space - in Poland and in the destination countries - will be presented. The level and forms of participation of migrants in the political and social sphere in a comparative perspective will be examined. In addition, the special attention will be focused on the determinants of political and social participation, which are related to socio-demographic characteristics of migrants and length of stay abroad as well as political opportunity structure in country of origin and countries of destination.
