Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the media framing of the euro-crisis in three countries (Greece, Italy, Turkey). This issue is topical at present times, seen the recent financial crisis and the relative debates associated with the euro-zone that are emerging at the moment both at the national, European and international level. This research is overall grounded and takes theoretical and methodological inspiration from the recent intellectual debate that has been investigating the emergence of the European public sphere. This research agenda, has primarily been looking at how the national public spheres react to the emergence of the European integration in terms of developing new forms of news making, framing of European issues, etc. In particular, we take insights from the literature that has been looking at the media framing of the European union’s policies, processes and debates. We therefore focus on three media sources in each country in order to investigate the social representations of the euro-crisis. Our argument is that the framing of the debate in the media is crucial in determining the policy responses that the public institutions will plan in the next future, and will shape the future policy options in terms of political leadership and political direction (especially when it comes to Greece and Italy). By understanding this process (media representation, policy framing), we also attempt to map the overall social representations relative to the European Integration process and the positioning of these countries in the European and international arena.
