Public Support for EU Redistribution at Times of Crisis and Politicization

The paper focuses on citizens’ attitudes towards the EU’s policy to mitigate the economic effects of the corona pandemic through EU-wide redistribution. The paper is informed by the politicization literature, by linking public attitudes to party-political preferences and voting intentions, capturing the political costs and benefits of political parties’ and governments’ pro- and anti-redistribution stance. The paper is based on a two-wave panel survey in the Netherlands, a member state whose government is the informal leader of the Northern European coalition of “frugal” countries.
