Abstract

India is one of the world countries that has experienced a huge economic growth during last years, reaching the fifth position in the most powerful economies, according to IMF. Moreover, India is located in a privilege geographical position which has an important strategic value, close to the epicentre of geopolitics. Due to its relevance, this paper will develop an analysis about the geopolitical and geoeconomical context of India, based on classic theories of international relations such as the neo-realism of Waltz or Mearsheimer, in order to understand the historical defensive position of India in the international system, or the neoliberalism of Keohane and Nye to search within the complex net constituted by the interests and interactions related to cooperation and the concept of smart power, as a result of the combination of hard and soft power.
