Trafficking for forced marriage to China

Abstract

The growing demand for foreign brides in China has created an emerging market for traffickers in the region. Cambodian children and women, eager to escape impoverished lives in rural villages, are entering brokered marriages to Chinese men in the hope of a more lucrative life. In reality, many children and women find themselves deceived about their new living conditions, with many resettled in rural China, forced to work on farms or as domestic helpers, with some experiencing abuse at the hands of their husbands. Increasing unemployment in Cambodia and the amount of local and international traffickers and limitation of prosecution, there were hundreds of young Cambodian girls being trafficked to China under false promises of a good job in China and marriage to the rich Chinese men. Finally, the vast majority of them report experiencing violence and abuse during their stay with their partner/husband. These include: Restriction of Movement: being locked up in the bedroom or in the house, being closely monitored by family members and their documents being locked out of their reach. Physical, Sexual, Mental Abuse: sexual violence, bullying, threats of charging them certain amount of money if they file for divorce or try to escape. Types of work: extensive housework, work on the fields, some were sent to work in the factory, but never receiving any wages.
