Abstract

Are gender+ issues salient in the Euromanifestos in 2024 elections? Is there an opposition to gender+ issues? How do parties frame these issues? Is politicization of these issues on the rise compared to ten years ago? For the purposes of this project, we define gender+ issues broadly, including both class and status issues, and develop a new codebook that offers a comprehensive coding scheme. We then collect and systematically code the manifestos of the key European party groups from the 2024 elections, mapping issue saliency and frames parties use when they talk about gender+ and anti-gender issues. We then compare our findings with how parties talked about gender+ issues 10 years ago as well as with the Euromanifestos of the national parties in Italy, Austria, and Czech Republic. The study contributes to our knowledge of the saliency, framing, and ownership of gender+ issues in party manifestos at the European level, which remain understudied in the literature.
