Abstract

Cecilia Josefsson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Uppsala University, Sweden. Her research employs feminist institutionalism and focuses on political institutions and representation from a gender perspective in a wide variety of contexts, including sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Scandinavia. Cecilia received her PhD in 2020. In her dissertation, Adaptive Resistance: Power Struggles over Gender Quotas in Uruguay, she explores (male) political elites' resistance to gender equitable reforms and women's political inclusion. In 2023, the dissertation was awarded the ECPR Joni Lovenduski PhD Prize in Gender and Politics. A book manuscript based on her dissertation research, Defending the Status Quo: On Adaptive Resistance to Electoral Gender Quotas, is under contract at OUP in the new feminist institutionalist book series. She has published articles in journals such as Comparative Political Studies, Perspectives on Politics, Politics & Gender, International Political Science Review, Parliamentary Affairs, Representation, and Politics, Groups, and Identities. Currently, Cecilia is researching gendered working conditions and leadership in the Swedish Parliament, resistance to gender equitable institutional change, and political representation in sub-Saharan Africa during COVID-19. From 2023, Cecilia is the coordinator of the Feminism and Institutionalism International Network (FIIN).
