Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the emergence and ideological bedrock of the far right in Chile, with a specific lens on José Antonio Kast and the Republican Party (PR). It probes into the ideological pillars such as authoritarianism and nativism, which have steered the far right's rise, leading to the politicization of issues like penal punitivism, strict gender roles, and stringent immigration policies. Alongside these ideological components, the chapter also explores their strong inclination towards neoliberal policies and a robust opposition to communism. Furthermore, it delves into the intricate relationship between Kast, the PR, and democratic principles, highlighting how Chile's unique political history and the legacy of the Pinochet regime influence this dynamic. A critical element in this discourse is the strategies of otherization of different groups, notably indigenous populations, immigrants, and left-wing elites which underscores the far right's approach to identity politics. The chapter also assesses factors that might shape the future trajectory of the far right in Chile, providing insights into their potential impact on the political landscape.
