Abstract

On October 7th Hamas launched an attack on the Israeli communities leaving next to the Gaza Strip, it carried a horrendous massacre and kidnapped around 253 people to Gaza. On this day, the bloodiest in Jewish history since WWII, the sense of security among Israeli citizens was shattered. The residents living on the Gaza periphery evacuated completely from their homes, as did all residents in communities along the border with Lebanon in the northern part of the country. In the evolving public discourse in Israel, it appears that all conceptual ideas held by the Israeli public regarding security have crumbled, and there is a need to build a new conceptual framework that will truly provide the desired security. This research paper tracks the public and political discourse in Israel after October 7th, exploring whether and how the concept of security has been destabilized and reconstructed, and how one can explain the practices that Israel chose to employ in order to achieve back the sense of security, given the changes in the concept of security, as/if they were.
