Abstract

This paper explores the role of elections and voting in deliberative democracy. First, it highlights that the relationship between deliberation and voting has long remained undertheorized. Second, it questions the role assigned to elections since the ‘systemic turn’ in deliberative democracy, pointing to the lingering effects of the deliberative democrats' initial lack of interest in the act of casting a ballot, and offers some tentative remarks on the specific rationales underpinning voting in elections.
