Does the venue matter? The behaviour of far-right political parties in international parliamentary assemblies

How do international fora influence far-right politicians? Do they remain consistent with their domestic policy positions across different different international organisations? The study compares the policy statements and voting behaviour of prominent far-right party members in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (CoE PA), the European Parliament (EP), and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) with their domestic political agenda on the issues of democracy promotion, international migration, and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. We hypothesise that in the politically prominent EP, far-right politicians remain more consistent with their domestic party positions, whereas they are less likely to deviate from mainstream parties’ positions in the politically less relevant CoE PA and OSCE PA. We further expect parties’ domestic government-opposition position to influence their stances in international parliamentary assemblies.
