Abstract

The concept of Secularism has been defined as the separation between the State and religion. Countries like India have contested this separation definition and argued that the definition of separatism is Western, particularly European, which originated from conflict between the institution of the Church and the King. Even in daily conversation, secularism has been defined as a project to separate the domain of the State from religion. In present times scholars like Jürgen Habermas have argued that religion has started to dominate political affairs and termed it as a post-secular age. The researcher will contest the definition of Secularism in the paper and argue that Secularism is an Essentially Contested Concept using W.B. Gallie’s seven criteria framework.
