Abstract

Pär Zetterberg is Professor of Political Science at Uppsala University in Sweden. His main research interests lie in the area of comparative politics, with a focus on gender, and include issues such as candidate recruitment, political parties, electoral quotas, political violence, authoritarianism, and political representation. He is co-editor of the book Gender and Violence against Political Actors (with Temple University Press, 2023). His new book, Autocratic Genderwashing: Women’s Rights as Authoritarian Strategies (with Princeton University Press, forthcoming), summarizes and further develops research that has been published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Comparative Politics, on how autocracies weaponize women’s rights. A brief version of its argument about “autocratic genderwashing” has been published in Journal of Democracy (2022). In a new four-year (2025-2028) research project (funded by the Swedish Research Council), he extends this work to include also “genderbashing”, in order to understand under what circumstances authoritarian governments decide to support or crack down on women’s rights.
