Systematic Review of Studies on European Citizenship and Democracy

This study provides a systematic review of academic research on European citizenship and democracy, with the objective of identifying dominant conceptualizations as well as diverse and nuanced perspectives within the existing literature. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted to ensure transparency and methodological rigor. Through a strict selection and screening process, 102 peer-reviewed articles were identified from the Web of Science database. These studies were analyzed thematically to examine how European citizenship is conceptualized in relation to democracy, education, policy, and civic participation. Particular attention was paid to uncovering underlying assumptions, normative orientations, and potential biases embedded in prevailing definitions and frameworks.
