The concept of ontological security was introduced into international relations research on a broader scale in the first decade of the 21st century. Although controversy exists, particularly within security studies, regarding its precise application, it appears useful, among other things, in explaining certain changes taking place in Central and Eastern Europe that have a religious component. In this presentation, I will attempt to highlight the role of religion in building national identity in Central and Eastern Europe. Using the example of the Polish Solidarity movement and the events that took place at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, I will explain the causes of the fall of communism in Poland and, consequently, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the changes in the international order.
