Abstract

Following in the steps of a series of successful ECPR sections on presidential politics, 2016-2021, this section brings together panels and papers with the ambition of advancing theory and empirical research of direct relevance to presidency research. Priority will be given to comparative approaches, meaning that also single case studies should strive to be essentially comparative in character. We welcome panel proposals on relevant dimensions of contemporary research on presidential politics such as presidential activism, presidential legitimacy and public opinion, institutional relations, presidential parties and coalition building, political leadership, and the president’s role in policy-making. Ideally, the section will cover different world regions and countries, directly and indirectly elected presidents, and a dynamic mix of early career and senior scholars. Preliminary panel themes and chairs (the section may include additional panels): - Presidents in public: strategies and sources of informal presidential power (Panel Chair: Lukas Pukelis, Public Policy and Management Institute, Vilnius, and Mažvydas Jastramskis, Vilnius University) - Presidential activism and foreign policy (Panel Chair: Mara Morini, University of Genoa) - Too weak or too strong? Curbing presidential power in Latin America (Panel Chair: Christopher Martinez, Universidad Católica De Temuco)
