Political parties, social movements, and activist organisations have become increasingly important actors in contemporary democracies. This section examines the strategies, organisational dynamics, and electoral fortunes of populist, radical, and extremist actors, as well as the responses of mainstream parties, social movements, and civil society organisations. It also welcomes contributions examining the interactions between institutional and extra-institutional forms of political action and the conditions that facilitate or constrain the success of radical political actors.
