Abstract

Gender equality is claimed by the EU to be one of its founding principles, yet scholars have repeatedly and consistently demonstrated the gap between rhetoric and reality. The pay gap; the underrepresentation of women in sites of political and economic decision making; their overrepresentation in care-giving in the domestic, private and public sphere; and the persistence of gender-based violence against women, all demonstrate that 60 years after the introduction of equal pay for equal work in Article 119 of the Treaty of Rome, gender equality in the EU has yet to be achieved. This section invites panels and papers which engage with the European Union from a gender perspective. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Explaining changes in the EU’s gender equality policy and policymaking - Actors, institutions and frames - Policy Agendas - Civil society actors and the EU - Presence of women in EU decision making - Gendered impact of EU policy - Gender equality policy in the Member States - The relation between gender mainstreaming, diversity mainstreaming, and the mainstreaming of other crosscutting issues, such as human rights and climate change - Crisis - Migration and migrants - Islam and gender - Trafficking - Rise of the extreme right - Brexit - Demographic crisis and care deficit Theoretical, methodological and empirical papers are all welcome
