Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University is one of the oldest education institutions in Ukraine. The reputation of its educational, research and cultural traditions is acknowledged far beyond the state borders. It was founded in 1805 funded by Oleksandr and Illia Bezborodko brothers as Gymnasium of Higher Science with the university status. Throughout its 210 years of functioning, Nizhyn University has changed its areas of education several times: Physics and Mathematics Lyceum (1832-1840), Law Lyceum (1840-1875), Institute of History and Philology (1875-1919), Institute of People’s Education (1919-1933), Pedagogical Institute (1933-1998), Pedagogical University (1998-2004), and, finally, Classic University (since 2004). Since its foundation, the University has trained more than 60,000 graduates: teachers, lawyers, engineers, etc. Many acclaimed scientists and cultural figures are its alumni, among them Mykola Gogol, after whom the University was named in 1939. To-date, there are six faculties and institutes (Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, Educational and Research Institute of Philology, Translation, and Journalism, Oleksandr Rostovskyi Educational and Research Institute of Art, Faculty of Psychology and Social Work, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Faculty of History and Law). These units comprise 20 departments. The educational process is provided by 213 lecturers, among them 38 professors with the doctor’s degree and 137 associate professors with the degree of doctor of philosophy. The university issues diplomas for three degrees; bachelor, master, and doctor of philosophy. Currently, there are 1500 undergraduate and post-graduate students at studies. The University’s departments maintain close ties with educational and research facilities abroad, in the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Georgia, Greece, China, Sweden, etc. Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University is an active participant of international projects, programmes (including Erasmus+), and grants and has a close cooperation with international agencies like The British Council, The United States Agency for International Development, Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Goethe-Institut, etc.
