Expert interviews are today a standard method of qualitative approach in the social sciences. It is surprising that methodological reflections about the expert interview are still lacking. This book gives a comprehensive overview of their theory and practice. The contributors are experienced theorists and practitioners of expert interviews.

Alexander Bogner is a sociologist and researcher at the Institute of Technology Assessment, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Austria. He teaches Qualitative Methods at the University of Vienna and his research interests include science and technology studies, sociology of biopolitics and methods of empirical social research.


Beate Littig is Head of the Sociology Department at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, Austria. She studies Sociology at the Universities of Göttingen, Hamburg and at the Free University Berlin. Her research and teaching include qualitative methods, gender studies, environmental sociology and the sociology of work.

Wolfgang Menz is a researcher at the Institute for Social Science Research, ISF München, Germany. He studied Sociology und Political Science at the Universities of Marburg, Frankfurt and Edinburgh. He lectures at the Universities of Vienna and Frankfurt and his research interests include the sociology of work and organisation, science studies and methods of qualitative research.

Gabriele Abels is a Professor for Comparative Politics and European Integration at the Institute of Political Science, University of Tübingen. Her research interests are European integration, political participation, biotechnology policy, gender studies.


Georg Aichholzer is Project Director and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Technology Assessment (ITA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Senior Lecturer at Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration.

Maria Behrens is Professor at the Department of Political Science at the University Wuppertal, Germany.

Gabriela B Christmann is Head of the research department 'Dynamics of Communication, Knowledge and Spatial Development' at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (IRS) in Erkner. Her main research interests include the sociology of knowledge and culture, urban sociology, communication analysis, and methods of qualitative research.

Ulrike Froschauer is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Sociology, University of Vienna, Austria. Her main research interests are in the field of the sociology of organisations, sociology of organisational consulting, methodology and methods of qualitative research and evaluation.

Jochen Gläser is a Senior Researcher at the Technical University of Berlin’s Center for Technology and Society. His major research interests are in the sociology of science, sociological theory and qualitative methods.

Manfred Lueger is Associate Professor at the Institute for Sociology and Social Research, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration.

Michael Meuser is Professor for the Sociology of Gender Relations at the University of Dortmund, Germany. His research interests are: sociology of gender, sociology of knowledge, qualitative methods, political sociology, sociology of the body.

Ulrike Nagel is a Senior Lecturer of Microsociology, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg,

Vaida Obelene˙is a sociologist by training, working on social stratification in post-communist Europe. Currently she is a PhD researcher at the European University Institute (Florence) in the department of Social and Political Sciences.

Michaela Pfadenhauer is Professor for Sociology at Karlsruhe University.
