Akudo McGee is a PhD researcher at Maastricht University based both in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and centre of excellence for research on European integration, Studio Europa Maastricht. She is also head of 89 Netherlands, the Dutch chapter of pan-European think-do tank, 89 Initiative. Her research focuses on the breakdown of liberal democracy in Poland since 2015, especially concerning threats to the rule of law and human rights. She examines the effect that such a breakdown has on Poland's civil society and the strategies employed by civil society to counter backsliding. She argues that the tasks of guarding the EU's treaties and upholding its norms are outsourced to under-resourced private individuals and civil society organisations as a result of inactive and late-acting EU institutions. Akudo holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in German Language and Cultural Studies and a Master of Arts from the University of Amsterdam in European Studies: Identity and Integration. Her project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 847596.
