About

Başak Akkan is an associate professor at the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Bilgi University. Before joining Istanbul Bilgi University, she taught at the Graduate Program in Social Policy at Boğaziçi University and was an affiliate of the Social Policy Forum. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Social Science from Utrecht University, an MS degree in European Social Policy from the London School of Economics, and a BA degree in Sociology from Boğaziçi University. Her research interests are in the theories of justice and inequality with a particular focus on intersectionality, institutionalist analysis of care regimes, comparative social policy, and child well-being studies. Since 2014, she has been acting as a research partner of CUWB, an international research network on child well-being. Between 2017 and 2019, she acted as one of the principal researchers from Turkey and a member of the executive board of the EU Horizon 2020 project ETHOS (European Theory of Justice and Fairness). She has published in several scientific journals, including New Perspectives on Turkey, Child Indicators Research, Children and Youth Services, Feminist Theory, Historical Social Research, Journal of Gender Studies, Social Inclusion, and Social Politics. The book that she co-edited, titled “Overlapping Inequalities in the Welfare State: Strengths and Challenges of Intersectionality Framework”, will be published by Springer in 2024.
